[Hong Kong, 28 February 2010]: Conquering stiff competition, a new race route and warm conditions at the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2010, Kenya’s Cyprian Kiogora Mwobi repeated as Men’s Full Marathon champion with a winning time of 2:20:12 while Triyaningsih of Indonesia won the Women’s Full Marathon with a time of 2:47:35. In total, over 52,000 participants took off at the sound of the starting gun for the Full Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km races.
Standing under the “Join the Race, Feel the Energy” slogan of the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2010, Mr. Donald Tsang, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, fired the starting gun that sent thousands of athletes and running enthusiasts off into the streets in the early morning hours. Loud cheers could be heard by fans all along the race route—which this year included Stonecutters Bridge as well as a section of Route Eight for the Full Marathon—as the runners passed, culminating with a storm of applause at the finish line at Victoria Park.
Tubei John Chirchir of Kenya came in second in the Men’s Full Marathon with a time of 2:23:30, while Ser-od Bat-Ochir of Mongolia finished third at 2:25:02. China’s Jing Ling Ling and the Philippines’ Jho-An Banayag came in second (2:48:40) and third (2:52:33) in the Women’s Full Marathon.
Junji Konomi of Japan won the Men’s Half-Marathon in a time of 1:11:27 while Italy’s Stefamo Rassarello and the Philippines’ Mendel Lopez came in second (1:13:08) and third (1:13:13). Nakamura Kuniko completed a Japanese sweep of the Half-Marathon by winning the Women’s event with a time of 1:23:40, while Yiu Kit-ching of Hong Kong came in second (1:25:11) and Australia’s Jane Hodgskin finished third (1:30:38).
Hong Kongers swept the 10km Challenge Men’s Overall division, with Cheung Chun Fan (00:34:15), Andrew Naylor (00:34:22) and Kwok Chi-wai (00:34:41) finishing first, second and third respectively. Victoria White from the UK won the Women’s event by finishing in 00:38:39, while Joyce Cheung of Hong Kong placed second (00:40:07) and Jiang Cheng-cheng (00:41:30) came in third.
Another event that enjoyed great support from participants and fans was the second Leaders Cup, a 1.8km race run by Hong Kong’s business and community leaders to help promote exercise and healthy living. James Riley, Group Finance Director of Jardine Matheson, successfully defended his title and won this year’s event. About 50 participants joined the race.
Mr Benjamin Hung, Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered (Hong Kong) Ltd., said, “The success of the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2010 reveals two main things: that the race has firmly been established as one of Asia’s premier sporting events, and that living a healthy, goal-oriented lifestyle is becoming increasingly more popular among Hong Kong people. We saw thousands of runners today give it their best, and what is even more encouraging is the amount of fan support on the streets and at the finish line.”
Once again, many runners got into the Marathon spirit by dressing up in elaborate costumes, creating a fun-filled atmosphere and adding another level of enjoyment to the race for participants as well as spectators, who came out in droves to support the athletes. Commercial Radio was at the scene with a group of singers including Kay Tse, Jason Chan, Janice and Aarif Lee, who joined in cheering the runners from onstage.
Other sponsors of the 14th Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon include the Western Harbour Tunnel Company Limited, Citizen Watches (H.K.) Limited, Watsons Water, New Balance Athletic Shoes (Hong Kong) Limited, Crown Motors Limited, PURE Fitness, Regal Hotels International, POAD Group Limited, and the Information Services Department.
