Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2008
Charity Programme Raises HK$ 1.55 Million

[Hong Kong, 30 April 2008]: With generous support of the public, the Standard Chartered Marathon Charity Programme has raised over HK$1.5 million from this year’s Marathon.

The funds donated will be used to support the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (HKPC&SAPD) and Standard Chartered’s “Seeing is Believing” global fund raising programme. In appreciation of the enthusiastic donor support, Standard Chartered conducted a special cheque presentation for the charity beneficiaries today.

Standard Chartered has been a longstanding supporter of HKPC&SAPD through the charity programme, which has raised HK$1.28 million for the association in 2008. With the support from Standard Chartered, the HKPC&SAPD can continually progress in the athlete’s development programs to identify and nurture the abilities of young potential athletes, especially for the soon coming Beijing Paralympic Games this year, with the hope that these athletes will continue to do their best and win glory for the HKSAR. Over the past 12 years, Standard Chartered Marathon Charity Programme has raised over HK$15 million to HKPC&SAPD.

Standard Chartered has expanded the charity programme by encouraging the public and participating runners to make donations for the visually-impaired in the developing world since 2004. Through a range of projects focusing on prevention and intervention, Standard Chartered’s “Seeing is Believing” charity campaign aims at making a difference to the lives of 10 million people by World Sight Day 2010. A total of HK$270,000 has been raised through the charity programme in 2008. The entire amount is donated to ORBIS, the Bank’s partner in treating curable blindness in China.

Mr Benjamin Hung, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited said, “At Standard Chartered, we are dedicated in supporting and giving back to the communities where we live and work. We are delighted that the people of Hong Kong have embraced our community initiatives, and I’d also like to thank all of our individual and corporate donors – as well as our enthusiastic staff volunteers – for their kind and generous support.”

Over 50,000 registered runners, 160 corporate teams and 2,500 Standard Chartered staff runners took part in the Standard Chartered Marathon 2008, all of them contributed to the significant amount of donations generated this year. The top three corporate teams in the Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10km were also in attendance at today’s ceremony and their great efforts were recognised by the Bank.
