Pre-participation Self-Assessment

Key Points:

  • The Hong Kong Association of Sports Medicine and Sports Science (HKASMSS) is of the opinion that regular running is good for our cardiovascular and overall health. Competitive long distance running, like marathon, demands the individual to have proper training, good preparation and a high degree of cardiovascular fitness and all runners have the responsibility to consult their physicians to ensure that they are medically fit to run the Marathon. 
  • The HKASMSS has also developed a pre-participation self-assessment checklist that would help to identify the high risk individuals and there are eight elements:

  1. Chest pain or discomfort during exercise.
  2. Unexplained fainting or near-fainting.
  3. Excessive breathlessness or fatigue, associated with exercise.
  4. Prior recognition of a heart murmur.
  5. Family history of premature death (before age 50 years) due to heart disease or family history of inheritable heart disease.
  6. History of heart disease, stroke or peripheral artery disease.
  7. Major coronary risk factors including Diabetes, Smoking, Hypertension and high lipid level.
  8. Men over 45 and women over 55.
  • Participants who find themselves in any of the above suggested high risk 
  • groups are recommended to have a thorough medical assessment before entering the Marathon events.
  • Family doctor can take reference of the “Simplified version for Pre-Participation Cardiovascular Evaluation” as suggested by HKASMSS.
